G.I. Joe Classified : Kamakura
Kamakura is one of the latest figures in the G.I. Joe Classified series by Hasbro. This 6-inch scale figure is based on the character from the G.I. Joe comic book series by Marvel and later adapted by IDW Publishing.
He looks awesome. The level of detail on Kamakura is incredible, from his Samurai armor to his multiple weapons. He’s an incredibly detailed, well-articulated figure with plenty of accessories and a cool ninja aesthetic.
Kamakura is one of the most beloved characters in G.I. Joe’s history. His unique blend of martial arts training and technological know-how made him a fan favorite from the moment he debuted on the pages of Marvel’s G.I. Joe comics in 1984.
Now, nearly thirty years later, Kamakura is making his return to comics in IDW’s G.I. Joe: Classified series. And we couldn’t be more excited!
His character was always a bit of an outsider among the Joes. He was quiet and introspective, preferring to solve problems with his fists rather than his words. But what he lacked in social graces, he more than made up for in skill and determination.
Unboxing
Opening this figure, again a couple of things struck me right away. First, the box art didn’t have the same impact as others in the line. The artwork comes across as very cartoonish. It’s not bad by any means. Just not my cup of tea.
I also can’t ignore the change in box size. This box is a good quarter inch smaller than the previous plastic packaged figures. As well, it has a big ass flap with a peg hole to display at retail. It’s not a deal breaker but it does break the collection aesthetic when sitting on your shelf.
The packaging inside is not too bad this time around. It’s not just brown cardboard like a couple of previous figures. I’m looking at you, Cobra Viper 3 Pack. They added printed sides to give it a little more pop.
The figure itself is nice. He comes packaged with an alternate head, two hood options, a sword sheath backpack, two katanas, an uzi, a pistol, and a sword staff that splits in two. Ya, that is a ton of accessories. I hope that this is the trade-off for Hasbro going with no plastic packaging. Because if it is, I can learn to live without it.
There is some reuse here. The Storm Shadow hood is an example and from what I can tell the Storm Shadow torso is as well. But for the most part, the figure looks pretty darn good. I am digging the alternate head!
Pros
- Great Looking Figure
- The posing is pretty nice
- Tons of Accessories
- Alternate Head
Cons
- The box size is off
- Box art is just ok
- A cardboard case to put the accessories in feels cheap
If you’re a fan of G.I. Joe or just cool-looking action figures in general, then you need to add Kamakura to your collection.
